Volunteering At The Zoo

· PAWZ stands for Positive Action for Wildlife at the Zoo. That’s the mission for our teen (ages 13-17) volunteer branch. PAWZ volunteers attend monthly meetings to prepare for a “Mission of the Month” that will be carried out during their monthly volunteer shift. Missions include creating animal enrichment for our animals to interact with, acting as animal ambassadors, encouraging visitors to explore nature, and inspiring our guests to care about conservation, and more! PAWZ volunteers receive Mission Passes to use on months they are not available to help out at the zoo. Contact us at (217) 585-1821 ext 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to find out how to join our team.

· ZooGOERS general volunteer program is for adults ages 18 and up. They help the Henson Robinson Zoo staff with grounds work, guest greeting and information, office work, preparation of behavioral enrichment items, classroom assistance, readying animal diets, and special events!  Jump on board our team of Zoo GOER volunteers anytime in 2019 after attending one of our quarterly Onboarding Orientations. Contact us at (217) 585-1821 ext 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to find out how to join our team and to sign up for an orientation.

· Docents education volunteer program is for adults 18 and older that enjoy working with people and love animals. Docents share their knowledge of animals to create connections with the wild world and inspire animal conservation with visitors of all ages. Docents do this by:

o  Taking out our education animals into the zoo and sharing messages about them.

o  Answering questions about animals in their exhibits.

o  Interpreting animal biological artifacts.

o  Giving tours.

o   Working at activity stations that help people understand the importance of conservation and that encourage nature exploration.

As a Zoo Docent, not only will you enhance our visitors’ experience at the zoo, but you will have an opportunity to enrich your own life by learning more about animals and their ecosystems and having fun talking with visitors and interacting with the animals. Requirements include a $45 registration fee and attendance of a 6 class training course. Contact us at (217) 585-1821 ext 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to find out how to join our team.

Opportunities To Bring The Zoo To Your Facility

“Wild About Reading” Animal Outreach Programs For PreK-Kindergarten

Wild About Reading programs are perfect for your group of pre-schoolers through Kindergarteners! With twelve different themes to choose from, there is a Wild About Reading program that will be just right for your students. Each 45 minute program consists of a theme related story, group activity, and two animal visitors. We limit audience size to less than 40 participants, ages 2 and up. Costs for programs inside of Springfield are $60.00 for one program. However, consecutive programs within that same visit are at a reduced rate of $40.00 per program. Programs outside of Springfield but within Sangamon County are $70 + a round trip mileage fee calculated for your location for the first program and $50 per consecutive program/same visit. Contact the Education Department at (217) 585-1821 ext. 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to inquire about program themes.

“Zoo To You” Animal Outreach Programs For All Ages

Are you looking to enrich your NGSS life science curriculum or animal unit, to get help earning a badge, to reward students with a fun assembly for good behavior, or to have a unique guest speaker or activity for your after school program, residents, or group members? If so, you need a Zoo To You program! The Zoo’s Education Department has a wide spectrum of fun and educational program themes for audiences of all ages that we can bring to YOUR facility. We also have several “series themes” if you would like multiple visits that are tied into a central theme. We can perform our programs for a variety of audience sizes from a single classroom to a school assembly. However, due to the size of our program animals and the increase in noise levels for larger audiences, we ask that assembly audiences be limited to 150 students or less. Multiple assembly programs may be required to accommodate all students. Typically, our programs are 45 minutes. The number of animals in the program depends on the program theme requested. Costs for programs inside of Springfield are $80.00 for one program. However, consecutive programs within that same visit are at a reduced rate of $60.00 per program. Programs outside of Springfield but within Sangamon County are $90 + a round trip mileage fee calculated for your location for the first program and $70 per consecutive program/same visit. Contact the Education Department at (217) 585-1821 ext. 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to inquire about program themes or to help us create a custom theme for your needs.

“Interactive Zoo Experience” Interpretive Table

Are you looking for a “Zoo Booth” at your next event? Your event participants will enjoy stopping by our Interactive Zoo Experience table with a variety of our education animals, biological artifacts, and/or animal activities. Manned with our expert Zoo Staff and Docent volunteers, we are ready to interpret our items and answer all questions. Costs for events inside of Springfield are $80.00 per hour or $100 per hour for events outside of Springfield but within Sangamon County. Contact the Education Department at (217) 585-1821 ext. 1706 or 1703 or emcevoy@springfieldparks.org to inquire about availability.
