Gurgens Park is comprised of 270 acres on the far north side of the district, west of Business Route 55 (Peoria Road). The Sangamon River forms its meandering southwest boundaries. To the north is agricultural land, and east across the railroad is Carpenter Park.
Gurgens Park is primarily in the flood plain of the Sangamon River. Roughly 2/3 of the site is bottomland forest. The remaining is former farm fields that are being converted into forest and prairie. Vehicular access is from a controlled access road through the northern part of Carpenter Park. The Friends of Sangamon Valley and other groups are working to plant native species and control invasive plants.
It was purchased in 1970.
