[Springfield, IL] – The Springfield Park District is excited to announce the completion of a significant capital improvement project: the African Asian Mammals Interpretative Area. Funded through a 2020 Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Public Museum Capital Grant, this project marks a significant milestone in the zoo’s ongoing efforts to enhance animal care and visitor experience.

Scope of Project:
This facility will create a vibrant new home for African and Asian mammals, featuring a 700-square-foot indoor interpretive area and 800-square-foot outdoor habitat space where visitors can learn about their unique behaviors and habitats. Together, these new environments promise an enriching and entertaining experience for both the mammals and their human neighbors.

Project Funding:
The $1,030,922.19 project was funded through the IDNR Public Museum Capital Grant. The Springfield Park District’s commitment to best practices in animal care, visitor experience, and long-term functionality drove the meticulous planning and execution of the project.

Timeline:
The project, which began on March 16, 2021, reached completion on June 30, 2024. The timeline included engineering and design phases, delays caused by supply chain challenges and weather events like the derecho, and the need for specially engineered steel framing. Efforts were also made to minimize the construction impact on zoo visitors, ensuring the zoo continued to be an enjoyable destination throughout the project.

“We are thrilled to unveil the African Asian Mammals Interpretative Area, a testament to our ongoing commitment to creating a world-class zoo experience. This new facility not only enhances the well-being of our animals but also enriches the educational and recreational opportunities we offer our community. As we continue to innovate and expand, we look forward to providing memorable experiences for generations to come, ensuring that the Henson Robinson Zoo remains a beloved destination for families and animal enthusiasts alike.” – states Park Board President Leslie Sgro

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony:

Join us for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, September 13th, at Noon at the Henson Robinson Zoo. This event will celebrate the completion of the African Asian Mammals Interpretative Area and offer attendees the opportunity to explore the new facility where the commitment to animal welfare and education is fully displayed.
