[Springfield, IL] - The Springfield Park District is excited to announce a partnership with KultureCity®, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory needs. This collaboration has resulted in the Springfield Park District achieving Sensory Inclusive™ certification, enhancing the accessibility of the Henson Robinson Zoo, the Nelson Center, and all programs and events hosted at these facilities.
The KultureCity® Sensory Inclusive™ program, widely adopted by venues, stadiums, and cultural institutions globally, provides essential training and resources to help staff better accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities. As part of this certification, Springfield Park District staff participated in specialized training led by medical and neurodivergent professionals to recognize and assist guests with sensory needs and respond effectively to sensory overload situations.
Sensory sensitivities, often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other conditions, can make public spaces challenging. KultureCity® is founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to fully engage in life’s experiences. Its innovative programs and partnerships break down barriers and foster acceptance, enabling individuals with sensory sensitivities to enjoy public spaces and events with greater comfort and ease.
This Sensory Inclusive™ certification better equips the Springfield Park District to ensure all guests enjoy a positive, inclusive, and accommodating experience at the Henson Robinson Zoo and the Nelson Center.
Families planning to attend these facilities can download the free KultureCity® App to view available sensory features and access the Social Story, offering a helpful preview of what to expect during their visit. Each facility will also have designated signs indicating where to pick up sensory bags filled with sensory-inclusive items for patrons to use during their visit, as well as the locations of quiet areas and headphone zones.
"Empowering communities through inclusion and innovation, the Springfield Park District aligns with KultureCity®’s vision of a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is embraced and celebrated for their unique contributions,” said Uma Srivastava, Executive Director, KultureCity®.
"Ensuring that every member of the community feels welcomed and valued in parks, facilities, and events is a core mission of the Springfield Park District," said Leslie Sgro, President of the Springfield Park Board of Trustees. "Partnering with KultureCity® to achieve Sensory Inclusive™ certification is a critical step toward breaking down barriers and creating spaces where individuals with sensory needs can thrive. This partnership reflects an unwavering commitment to enriching lives through parks, people, and possibilities."
Since its founding in 2014, KultureCity® has led the way in fostering inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory needs and invisible disabilities. With more than 1,800 sensory-inclusive venues worldwide, nearly a million sensory bags distributed, and collaborations with major organizations such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, and FIFA, KultureCity® continues to make a significant impact. Its First Responder Training, which has saved 48 lives, demonstrates the organization's dedication to creating a more inclusive world.
The Springfield Park District is thrilled to work with KultureCity® to make spaces and events more accessible for everyone. This partnership supports the mission of enriching lives and creating meaningful opportunities for all members of the community.
