Gietl Park Redevelopment: Construction Progress and Exciting Next Steps

4/8/2025

As we continue to make strides in transforming Gietl Park, we’re excited to provide an update on the redevelopment, which was first announced last year. Thanks to a $600,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Springfield Park District is in the midst of transitioning the former Veterans’ Memorial Pool into a modern, ADA-accessible splash pad at 1900 Stanhope Road.

Project Recap

The original Veterans’ Memorial Pool and bathhouse were demolished last year to make way for the new splash pad. This demolition was the first major step in the redevelopment of Gietl Park. Now, as we move forward with the next phase of construction, we are preparing to pour concrete for the new splash pad area, which is expected to be a vibrant and family-friendly destination.

What’s New at Gietl Park?

Once completed, the splash pad will be designed to cater to multiple age groups, offering water play elements for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the splash pad, the park will feature:

  • Family-friendly park shelter for gatherings and events
  • Concrete plazas and walkways for accessibility
  • Enhanced lighting for evening use
  • Modern site furnishings such as a hammock area, benches, and trash receptacles
  • Lush landscaping to enhance the beauty of the park

These improvements are part of a larger vision to create a space that’s not only FUN but also safe and accessible for all visitors.

Grant Timeline and Next Steps

The IDNR OSLAD grant supports this redevelopment project from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2026, with construction now in full swing. As we begin pouring concrete this spring, the project is on track for completion by April 30, 2026.

We’re thrilled to bring this vision to life and can’t wait for the community to experience all that the new Gietl Park will have to offer. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward with this exciting redevelopment!
