Special Olympics

Special Olympics is a way to promote fun, sportsmanship, friendship, independence and good health for people with special needs. The Springfield Park District in conjunction with Special Olympics Illinois offers year-round  programming opportunities with a wide range of sports for athletes to choose from. To learn more about our Special Olympics programs contact Andre Hawkins at 217-503-4576 or email ahawkins@springfieldparks.org

Inclusion

The Springfield Park District understands that not every person with a disability needs to participate in our special needs programs. If you feel any program offered by the Springfield Park District would better meet the needs of you or your child, simply follow these steps for inclusion.

1. Register (at least two weeks in advance) for the program of choice and check the box on the registration form that states, "In need a modification because of a disability to enjoy this program."

2. Contact Andre Hawkins, Special Recreation Supervisor, at ahawkins@springfieldparks.org

3. Park District staff will complete a phone intake to assess your needs and determine how we can best facilitate your enjoyment of the program.

Behavioral Policy

The Springfield Park District Special Recreation program is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants. Our goal is to provide meaningful recreational opportunities while promoting respect, cooperation, and personal growth. To ensure a welcoming experience for everyone, all participants, caregivers, and staff are expected to adhere to our behavioral guidelines.

This policy outlines the expectations for conduct, as well as the procedures for addressing behavioral concerns. By participating in our programs, individuals agree to uphold these standards to create a supportive and enjoyable experience for all.
