Fitness In Parks!

Outdoor fitness in our parks can take place in a variety of ways...  The most common is when members of the community get out into the parks to bike, hike and walk the paved thoroughfares.

Outdoor fitness equipment found in our parks for adults provides a variety of meaningful outcomes to the community, including engaging participants in substantially more moderate to vigorous physical activity when they are out visiting the parks for their regular walking, jogging and hiking.  You get fresh air and enough sunlight along with a good dose of physical activity that will improve your overall health and mental well-being.

Our outdoor fitness areas are free for the public to utilize each season.  We have a variety of styles of equipment and they are located in multiple park areas throughout Springfield.  In addition to the "equipment" you will find, the Springfield Park District Recreation Department also organizes Outdoor Fitness Classes and Activities throughout our Summer Season.

The AARP FitLot Fitness Park was established in 2019. It is on the south side of the park next to the Lincoln Park Pavilion. The AARP FitLot design is a purposeful combination of equipment elements that provides a fully functional community fitness space in a park setting.  This equipment was the first of it's kind in the State of Illinois and was gifted to the Park District by AARP of Illinois.

Watch our Online Activity Portal for a list of FREE Summer Outdoor Fitness Classes that take place each year at the AARP FitLot thanks to a generous grant from AARP of Illinois!
